race day 1 course map
Click to see in full sizeThe race starts on the beach in Zadar, teams must swim 200m to their kayaks and then race off into the sunset towards the Kornati Archipelago. Navigating through the islands at night, teams arrive at Sali where they leave the kayaks and head for the Southern most point of Dugi Otok.

With dawn teams, swim and trek for the next 33 km along the full length of the Kornati Islands. Those that do not make it to the end of the Islands by sunset will be sent to a shorter course. This will be Short Course D.

Click to see in full sizeTeams will Kayak the 16km to Murter before embarking on a mountain bike passage through time. Leaving behind the developed tourist culture of the Adriatic coast, teams will ride through abandoned and destroyed towns as well as patches of minefields as the cross what was once the front lines in the Balkans conflicts of the early nineties. By Friday morning they will arrive at an ancient monastery on the river Krka and at dawn the top teams will be racing through the towering gorges that make this section of river so unique. Passing some spectacular waterfalls, teams will make their way to Visovac, and must carry their kayaks 1.5 km uphill before continuing on foot to Oklaj.

Those teams that fail to start the kayaking section before sunset on Friday will be directed to Oklaj at CP 18 and then on to the finish of the race in Short Course C.

Click to see in full sizeGetting their mountain bikes at Oklaj, teams will ride to the historic town of Knin. Once the stronghold of the Medieval Croatian Kingdom, this town was on of the first occupied during the conflict. The Castle in the town centre proudly flies the Croatian flag which can be seen for several kilometres. Leaving Knin the teams trek over Dinara, the highest mountain in Croatia and part of the mountain range that forms the border with neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina. This mountain section will take the teams to around 1900 metres before guiding them down through historic villages and castle to the Cetina River.

Click to see in full sizeWith the slower teams still back Knin, the lead teams reach the headwaters of the Cetina Rier. Those that haven't left Knin before 10:00hrs on Saturday morning will be directed on a short course rather than go over the mountain - These will be short course B. Teams will kayak and canyon the length of the Cetina from the headwaters at Purucko Jezero all the way to where it meets the sea in Omis Town. Day four will see the as far as Trilj whereby the clock will stop as the await the dawn on Day 5.

Click to see in full sizeDuring the night all teams should make there way down the first 47km of the river and be in Trilj. Those that miss the 10:00hrs cutoff on Sunday will mountain bike to the finish in Omis town. From here the river winds it's way through the mountain ranges in Spectacular gorges and valleys rarely less that 100m above their kayaks. This kayaking section is interspersed with some kayak carry around unpassable section of river as well as some spectacular abseils and canyoneering down waterfalls (one 60m high and two 20m high). Nightfall should see all the teams in Omis ready for the party…
